Since the time branding and marketing came into existence, advertisements started attracting customers. The Egyptians started the concept of advertising. After going through many stages of evolution and development, advertising reached its modern stage. The mode of advertising that has dominated the latest modern stage of advertisement is online advertisement. Within online advertisement, the most popular mode has been pay per click advertisement. The concept of pay per click advertisement is the newest among all concepts and within 7 years of existence, pay per click advertisement has captured the imagination of one and all.
When a user goes to Google and enters a search topic, then along with the results on the search page, some advertisements are displayed on the right hand side of the page. This section of the results page is called Google adWords and these advertisements are called pay per click advertisements. So powerful is the potential of Google adWords is that among all the departments and sections of Google, it generates the highest amount of revenue. It is not only Google that uses pay per click advertisements to earn revenue. Microsoft and Yahoo also use pay per click advertisements through their Microsoft adCenter and Yahoo Search Marketing respectively. Apart from these three, there are numerous other Search Engines like Ask.com and AOL that use pay per click advertisements to generate revenues for themselves.
Pay per click advertisements work on a simple model. The most popular pay per click advertisements work on the keyword model. When advertisers want to advertise on the popular web sites, they insert keywords in their pay per click advertisement banners. When the users search these keywords, their advertisements get displayed along with the search results. Advertisers bid for keywords and the winners get to occupy the more prominent places on the search results pages. When the users click on these pay per click advertisement banners, the advertisers pay the pay per click providers. There is no concept of upfront payment in pay per click advertisement campaigns. Payments are made at the rate of number of clicks. A fixed rate is decided per click. When this fixed rate is multiplied with the number of clicks generated from a particular provider, the result is the amount payable from the advertiser to the provider. The advertiser stands to benefit here because he or she can haggle with the providers because the pay per click advertisement market is highly competitive and multiple providers vie for business. The rate per click is also decided by the advertiser and can be changed as per the internal advertisement budget of the company.
A pay per click advertisement campaign is very easy to set up. The biggest advantage of this campaign is that it targets specific communities and locations. The users who click on banners are also those who are interested in the product or service. There is no effort required to convince them. Some say that the rate of conversion from pay per click advertisements is low. It has to be kept in mind is that pay per click advertisements are used to capture prospects. Converting these prospects into customers is the job of the advertiser.
